The
Kailash Manasarovar region in western Tibet attracts the faithful
of four great religions. Hindu Buddhist, Jain and bon devotees
journey to this pilgrimage site to take ritual dips in the
icy waters of the sacred Manasarovar Lake. The entrancing
peak of Mt. Kailash, a (6,714m) pyramid of travel restrictions,
adventures are also going therein increasing numbers to admire
the spectacular view and revel in the stark landscape. Our
trek begins with a scenic flight to Simihot in the northwestern
corner of Nepal. We then walk through forests, valleys, fields
and villages to cross the border into Tibet at Sher. The next
portion of the journey consists of a drive to Taklakot and
no to Darchan at the foot of Mt. Kailash. The trek around
the holy mountain takes around three days and a circuit of
Manasarovar Lake requires another four days of walking. We
return to Katmandu by making a detour to Lhasa, which is another
exciting adventure in itself.
