Upper Dolpo Trek - 24 Days

Upper Dolpo Trek is the most thrilling and exotic trek in the remote and hidden land of mid-western region of Nepal. Upper Dolpo Trek takes you to the Tibetan border of Karnali zone which is the isolated corner of Nepal untouched by the modern development. The focus point of this trek is the Shey Phoksundo National Park (3555 sq. km.), the biggest national park of Nepal. In this area you get the surreal beauty and striking charm which cannot be found in other trekking region and is unforgettable journey in your life. In this region you get the chance to know the cultural, religious and social life of the people of Himalayan region which is similar to that of Tibet. This region is rich in herbs though it is thinly vegetated and shadowed from the seasonal rain. Upper Dolpo Trek is the Restricted Area Trekking for which you need the special permit and must be well equipped and self-sufficient. To preserve the unique culture and tradition of the people and exceptional natural beauty and ecosystem, only limited number of trekker are allowed.

The main attractions of Upper Dolpo Trekking are Shey Phoksundo National Park which is rich in wildlife, lakes, isolated villages with their unique culture, ancient Buddhist monasteries, thrilling landscape, the panorama of majestic mountains like Kanjirowa, Dhaulagiri etc. From Kathmandu you flight to Nepalgunj then to Jufal from where you begin your trekking. The trail passes through enormous mountain ranges like Kanjirowa, Dhaulagiri, and Annapurna. In this trek you also reach the highest inhabited area, village of Charka Vote and Tarap Gaun in Dolpa, of the world.  This adventurous journey offers you the opportunity to encounter the interesting villages, unique culture of the Dolpo people and their practice of the pre-Buddhist Bon Po religion, different valleys and peaceful forest of pines and rhododendron.  It also provides the chance to hike to the Nepal’s deepest lake Shey Phoksundo (650m deep) which is also known as the ‘Dead Lake’ as no species found in the lake. Though this trek takes around one month and a little bit long, it offers you the incomparable pleasure which you will never forget.

Upper Dolpo Trekking Itinerary

Day 01: Arrive Kathmandu (1,300m)

Day 02: Kathmandu valley sightseeing & trek preparation (1,300m)

Day 03: Fly from Kathmandu - Nepalgunj & Transfer to Hotel

Day 04: Fly Juphal from Nepalgunj (2320m), trek to Sulighat (2070m) 2/3 hours

Day 05: Sulighat – Renje (3010m), 5/6 hours trek.

Day 06: Renje – Ringmo village (3640m), Phoksundo Lake (3620m) 5/6 hours trek.

Day 07: Rest day in Phoksundo Lake and explore around Ringmo village

Day 08: Phoksundo Lake - Phoksundo Khola (3630m), 4/5 hours

Day 09: Phoksundo Khola - Phoksundo Bhanjyang (4120m) 6/7 hours

Day 10: Phoksundo Bhanjyang to Sehu-La passes (5160m), Shey gompa (4390m), 5/6 hours

Day 11: Rest day at Shey Gompa: The Crystal Monastery

Day 12: Shey gompa to Saldang La (5010m/16432ft), Namgung village (4430m), 6/7 hours

Day 13: Namgung village to Saldang (3620m), 4/5 hours

Day 14: Saldang - Yangze Gompa (4960m), 4/5 hours

Day 15: Yange Gompa - Sibu (4560m), 6/7 hours

Day 16: Sibu – Jeng La Phedi (4900m), 5/6 hours

Day 17: Jeng La Phedi – Jeng La pass (5090m) – Do Tarap (4080m),6/7 hours

Day 18: Day explore and acclimatization in Do Tarap.

Day 19: Do Tarap to Tarap Khola (Karmakharka) 3800m), 6/7 hours

Day 20: Tarap Khola – Khanigaon (3150m), 5/6 hours

Day 21: Khani Gaun – Tarakot (2537m) – Dunai (2030m), 5/6 hours.

Day 22: Dunai - Jhuphal (2320m) 2/3 hours

Day 23: Fly from Jhuphal to Nepalgunj to Kathmandu

Day 24: Departure/Transfer to international airport and fly to onward destination

Cost Includes:

  • All airport/hotel transfers
  • Accommodation in 3-star hotel (Hotel Samsara or similar category hotel) in Kathmandu, one nights in guest house in Nepalgunj/Jupal and tented accommodation in mountain

Cost Exclude:

  • Nepal Visa fee (bring accurate USD cash and two passport photographs)
  • International airfare to and from Kathmandu
  • Excess baggage charges (if you have more than 20 kg luggage, cargo charge is around $1.5 per kg)
  • Extra night accommodation in Kathmandu because of early arrival, late departure, early return from mountain(due to any reason) than the scheduled itinerary
  • Altitude chamber (PAC) or oxygen)
  • Lunch and evening meals in Kathmandu(and also in the case of early return from mountain than the scheduled itinerary)
  • Travel and rescue insurance
  • Personal expenses (phone calls, laundry, bar bills, battery recharge, extra porters, bottled water, shower, heater, etc.)
